Despite last week’s temperatures in the single digits, my niece removed 3 ticks from her 5# Yorkie. We are still seeing patients coming in with fleas. This shows why it is so important to keep up with flea and tick control year round. The cold weather does not guarantee that all ticks are killed. If your pets had fleas this summer, there may be residual eggs in your home if you did not treat your home and your pet at the same time. The heat and movement in the house cause the eggs to hatch. Don’t forget that if your dog that goes to the groomer, training classes, or day care, it can pick up fleas from those environments. Continue to check your pet each night for fleas and ticks.
