When I was asked to write this, the topic seemed simple enough – Why do you rescue senior dogs? As I thought about it I realized that the answer was difficult to put into words. After all, for the majority of folks our companion animals are part of our family for many years, so it seems a little ‘crazy’ to bring a dog into your life knowing that it will be for only a short time.
Then I started thinking about all the dogs that have come into – and left – our lives, and thought “why did we do it?” And slowly the answer came. They have so much to teach US!
It sounds simple – but start every day with a smile.
Stay open to new things and don’t judge – sometimes the most ‘unlikely’ friend makes the best friend.
The simple pleasures are the best.
Some days you just want to pull the blanket over your head – so do it.
There’s nothing like a good NAP!
And after that nap don’t forget to yawn – it’s invigorating!
Even though your joints may ache and you’re walking a little slower than before, when the urge strikes to kick up your heels – just do it! It’s good for the soul.
But mostly what our seniors have taught us is that their time with us is more important than our time with them. We miss those who have passed on, and think of them daily. And we are forever grateful for the lessons they taught us. Foster or Adopt a senior and let them teach you a thing or two!
