slider1Those of us who are cat owners know how special they are-quirky, cuddly, aloof, acrobatic, puzzling. We are completely devoted and sometimes frustrated by them at the same time.

One of the most frequently heard questions is…”Why does my cat wake me up at 2 a.m?” There is not one simple answer-but some of the reasons are the following:

1. Cats are nocturnal- they are used to be awake all night and sleeping during the day.

2. Because cats are natural hunters, any activity outside can make cats “go on the alert”.

3. Any condition that causes pain (dental disease, ear infections, osteoarthritis) can keep cats awake.

4. An overactive thyroid can cause cats to become hyperactive. Urinary issues (cystitis, diabetes, kidney problems) can cause cats to be in and out of the litter box around the clock.

Aging cats, typically in their teens, can experience cognitive dysfunction. Cats become easily confused, anxious, and extremely vocal. Sometimes antioxidant supplements and drugs that effect brain chemistry can be used.

We recommend an exam with possible lab work to rule out a medical cause for the behavior. Honestly, sometimes we can find an answer, and sometimes, it is just a “cat being a cat”. That’s why we love them, isn’t it……right?
